Black screen for OLED
On an OLED, pure black turns each pixel off — no backlight, no glow. Open it full screen to blank the display or check the panel.
What people use it for
Picture off, TV on
Keep audio, a console or a download running while the screen shows nothing at all.
Check true black
In a dark room an OLED showing black should look switched off. A gray glow points to a picture mode or HDMI range setting.
Look for burn-in
Burn-in hides on black. Switch to gray (← and →) or open the uniformity patterns in the screen test to see it.
Save battery on OLED phones
Black pixels draw almost no power, so this is the lowest-power image a phone can show.

Questions
Does a black screen prevent OLED burn-in?
Pixels that are off don’t wear, so a black screen adds no burn-in while it’s up. It doesn’t remove existing burn-in — the TV’s pixel refresh, which runs in standby, evens out wear.
Why does my OLED TV dim the black screen or show a screensaver?
Many OLED TVs dim or start a screensaver when the picture doesn’t change for a few minutes. That’s a TV setting, not something a web page can change.
Why isn’t black perfectly black?
Check that the TV’s black level (HDMI range) matches the source: Limited on one end and Full on the other turns black into gray.
